# Referable vs. Referred: How Advisors Get More Client Referrals

### Key Takeaways

- Credentials, service, and a good client experience make an advisor referable. On their own, they don't necessarily get a client to make the referral.
- Clients refer when a friend describes a problem, such as a family wealth transfer or a worry about the future, and they recognize their advisor as the person who solved it for them.
- Advisors can make referral moments easier to spot by telling clients, in plain language, which specific problems they solve.
- Every referral starts a validation phase. The prospect checks your website, bio and social profiles, and that's where your credentials and the standards behind them do their work.

Over two-thirds of high-net-worth (HNW) investors say their advisor's advanced credentials make them more likely to refer, according to the [Investments & Wealth Institute and Absolute Engagement's research with HNW investors](https://content.investmentsandwealth.org/publication/high-net-worth-investor-research-connection-between-confidence-expertise-growth). Being more likely to refer isn't the same as referring, though. Any advisor who has watched a delighted client go years without making an introduction has seen that gap, and it's where most referral strategies stall.

Julie Littlechild, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Absolute Engagement, has spent about 25 years asking investors what they think of their advisor relationships. On [The Exceptional Advisor Podcast](https://content.investmentsandwealth.org/podcast/do-clients-care-about-advisor-credentials), she frames the problem as the difference between being referable and facilitating a referral.

### What Is the Difference Between Being Referable and Getting Referred?

Being referable is the foundation: clients trust you, the service is consistent, and your expertise holds up. (Our guide to [how financial advisors build client trust](https://content.investmentsandwealth.org/blog/why-most-financial-advisors-are-building-trust-the-wrong-way) covers that groundwork.) Getting referred also requires a moment when a client connects your expertise to someone else's problem and says so out loud.

As Littlechild puts it, "Credentials make you referable. A good experience makes you referable. Good service makes you referable. All of these things are the foundation, but they don't necessarily get clients to say the words."

### Why Clients Don't Refer Advisors by Their Credentials

Think about where referrals happen: a dinner, a round of golf, a phone call with a sibling about an aging parent. People in those settings talk about their lives. They don't talk about the letters after their advisor's name.

What they do talk about, Littlechild says, is kids, money, and fears for the future. That's the trigger. A friend mentions that their adult children have no idea how to handle what they'll inherit, and your client remembers that you walked their family through that same conversation.

In Littlechild's example, the referral sounds like this: "My advisor has done some really specific training in this area and can help families navigate all of this. She met with us and guided us through those discussions. They weren't easy, but she made them that much easier. This is somebody you should talk to."

The credential sits behind that sentence. It's part of why the advisor could run those family meetings well. What the client recommends, though, is what the advisor did, because that's the part they remember.

### How to Help Clients Spot a Referral Opportunity

A client can only recognize a referral moment if they know which problems you solve. Many don't. They know you manage their portfolio. They may not know you also handle concentrated stock positions, prepare heirs to receive wealth, or plan retirement income around a business sale.

Littlechild sees closing that gap as the advisor's job: "The job of the advisor is to tie that expertise back to the problems that they can solve, and can solve better than anyone else."

Four ways to do that:

- **Describe problems, not services.** "Wealth transfer planning" is a service. "Helping parents prepare adult children to manage an inheritance" is a problem a client's friend might bring up at dinner.
- **Connect the result to your training.** After you finish a piece of work, such as a family meeting or a tax strategy for a stock sale, tell the client what prepared you to do it. That gives them a story they can repeat.
- **Explain your certifications in terms of client needs.** Tie each certification to something the client cares about and treats the curriculum and standards as supporting detail. Littlechild's research found that clients who were more aware of what their advisor's credentials meant were also more confident about their financial future.
- **Mention the situations you work on.** A line during a review, such as "we've been doing a lot of work with families going through a business sale," builds the association without asking for anything.

### What Referred Prospects Check Before They Contact You

A referral is one step in a longer process. Once a friend recommends you, the prospect goes online to look at your website and social profiles. Littlechild calls this the validation phase. The credentials probably didn't prompt the referral, but this is where they carry weight.

A prospect who just heard your client describe how you handled a family transition will look for evidence that the expertise is real. Check that your website bio and LinkedIn profile do three things:

- **Use your clients' words.** Describe the problems you solve the way clients describe them, so the prospect recognizes what their friend told them.
- **Explain each certification in a sentence or two.** Say what it covers and what it requires. A certification that requires education, experience, an exam, ongoing continuing education and a code of ethics means more to a prospect when you spell that out.
- **Show that your learning is current.** Recent conference sessions or continuing education show the prospect that your learning didn't stop at the exam.

### How to Keep Your Expertise Visible Between Client Meetings

Referral moments happen on the client's schedule, so Littlechild's advice is to keep reminding clients that your learning is ongoing. Even an out-of-office message saying you're at a conference for continuing education tells clients the training wasn't a one-time thing and that you're doing the work on their behalf.
