Best Practices in Portfolio Risk Management for Fiduciaries
As goals-based wealth management strategies continue to evolve, there is an increased need to better understand the drivers of risk and how to implement institutional caliber methodologies for risk management. Through establishing a culture that embraces proper due diligence, along with the use of new analytic tools and options-based strategies, advisors can differentiate themselves, improve client relationships and mitigate risk. This pre-conference workshop is designed to help fiduciary advisors conduct more meaningful risk assessments and implement best practices when creating portfolios for their high-net-worth clients.
Gib Watson is chief strategy officer at Swan Global Investments, LLC, a leading provider of hedged global equity solutions, separately managed accounts and mutual funds. Having spent several years as a trusted external advisor to Swan Global’s executive team, and as a former due diligence analyst who was impressed with the quality of the firm, the quality of the people and the quality and consistency of the rules-based investment process, he accepted this newly created role to help the company achieve its growth and profitability objectives. In this capacity, he is responsible for the firm’s P&L statement and is tasked with driving strategic initiatives in the areas of distribution, external partnerships, operations, technology, product development and marketing.
Watson has more than 30 years of experience as an advisor, entrepreneur and full-cycle executive in the wealth management industry. After leading the Wealth Management and Executive Financial Counseling divisions at Asset Management Group (now AMG National Trust Bank) and serving as National Managing Director of the Investment Advisory Services practice for KPMG LLP, he learned the art and science of advising ultra-high-net-worth families and corporate executives in all phases of personal finance and investments. He saw first-hand how time-consuming, challenging and cumbersome traditional financial and investment advisory processes were in the industry and believed that web-based technologies could automate the manager research, due diligence, portfolio management and advisory process.
Watson founded Prima Capital in 1999, a business-to-business RIA and technology development company whose mission was to empower advisors to be as successful as they could be with their practices while serving as fiduciaries in their clients’ best interests. Prima grew to become one of the leading providers of manager research, due diligence and advice which were delivered through enabling web applications known as PrimaGuide, AllocationGuide and the Retire Tool(k)it to wealth management and retirement businesses and advisors.
Watson is a graduate of Lafayette College and earned his MA and MBA degrees from Wake Forest University. He’s been an RIA since 1985 and earned his Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®) certification. He also gives back to our community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Economic Club of Colorado, the Board of Visitors of the Wake Forest University School of Business (his alma mater) and is involved on the Advisory Board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
