What does it mean to be strategic in running your practice? Becoming strategic is about becoming intuitively aware and opportunistically decisive using information from the environment in pursuit of your practice objectives. This session will deconstruct changing client preferences to build better clarity around your tactical decision-making. We conclude with a methods-based approach for gaining efficiency and optimizing your firm’s resources and capabilities for the decade ahead.

Brian A. Thompson
Clinical Professor of Economics, Director of the Economics Undergraduate Program, Richard H. Driehaus College of Business, DePaul University


Brian A. Thompson is a clinical professor of economics at DePaul University. He serves as the director for the economics undergraduate program and is a member of the DEI committee for the Driehaus College of Business. Thompson has held varying roles across the financial industry, including his experience as a securities trader and investment advisor. His passion for entrepreneurship and equitable opportunity accessibility has driven his pursuits in business across retail, professional services and real estate. Through his training and strategy consultancy Black & Essington Solutions, he delivers impactful training and advisory services to companies and organizations. Thompson is frequently invited to be on panel discussions and to speak at industry conferences and leadership retreats. He holds an MSF from the Illinois Institute of Technology, and he received his MBA and Doctor of Business Administration from DePaul University, where he studied the effects of reference point adaptation and commitment escalation on financial decision-making.
