Private Markets for the People? Or Just More People for Private Markets?

Private equity is increasingly being marketed as a retail-friendly opportunity, framed as a long-overdue “democratization” of alternative investments. But broader access does not automatically translate into better outcomes for individual investors. As private market products move beyond institutions and into client portfolios, advisors are being asked to reconcile lofty return narratives with high fees, limited transparency, and structural conflicts of interest. This article challenges the notion that access alone equals empowerment and outlines why advisors must apply the same rigor, skepticism, and fiduciary discipline to private equity that governs more traditional investment vehicles—if not more.
